Introduction
Hindu bashing, as with any ideology, however irrational,
requires the attempt at an intellectual foundation. In this respect, Hindu
bashing resembles the other hate ideology which has been the bane of what
is supposed to be the modern age of civilised society, with rational belief.
By this I am referring to anti-Semitism. The Holocaust did not arise spontaneously.
The ground had been prepared by 2000 years of anti-Jewish
programming in various parts of the world. If one feels this stretches things
back too far, then the Nazis themselves had their own 'intellectuals' who
made the idea of genocide acceptable, by wrapping crude symbols and vocabulary
in academic dressing. Even at a les severe level, anti-Semitism has its own
proponents whose arguments make great pains to prove their 'rationality' and
'academic' worth.
However, unlike anti-Semitism and other forms of hate,
Hindu bashing is unfortunately accepted by mainstream intellectuals, academia
and media without question. This is particularly so in the west. Often they
are not aware of the extremes which they are going to, and have not even asked
Hindu opinion on the matters which they are so strikingly judgemental. Often
it is the old tattered Marxist rhetoric, discredited almost everywhere else
by the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe and the former USSR, which is used
and presented in a pseudo-rational fashion.
Hindu Focus therefore counters this academic Hindu
bashing. While Hindu Dharma, like all belief systems and ideologies can be
scrutinised and examined, as is allowed in a democratic society, this should
not degraded to the level of mere insult. Indeed a society that cannot scrutinise
is not truly democratic. Rational enquiry should be encouraged in all spheres
if the intellect is to develop to its full potential. Banning arguments and
books because they are uncomfortable with facts is a sign of regression and
immaturity. But a society that uses a particular community as the human punching
bag of its frustrations, whether social, economic or political, is also not
truly democratic. The attack is not done with any rationality, intellectual
enquiry, or even by the broadest of definitions, in jest. It brings together
political and ideological outfits of all persuasions which propagate Hindu
bashing with venomous intent, despite the fact that they are often mutually
antagonistic in the absence of this common target. The parallels with anti-Semitism
are again perilously too close to be ignored.
Hindu bashing, with its 'intellectual' basis in the
printed and electronic media is the sphere of immediate concern to Hindu Focus.
We are of the opinion that balanced and objective analysis will dispel the
myths and prejudice which have lead to anti-Hindu sentiment becoming the mainstream.
With increasing interest in yoga, meditation, vegetarianism, Indian medical
treatment (Ayurveda), Indian astrology (Jyotish), and the oldest known language
(Sanskrit), the present plague of Hindu bashing will subside eventually. Hindu
Focus merely wishes this to happen sooner, so that Hindus can play their role
in intercultural global understanding and co-operation.
