Hindu Human Rights condemns the treatment faced by Dalit Hindus by the bigoted and narrow-minded administration of the Jagannath Temple in Keradagad in Orissa. Four Dalit Hindu women were allegedly assaulted following their entry into the premises by so-called "higher-caste" individuals, including the chief priest Narayan Das who has been reported as saying that Dalits are not allowed to enter the temple. If the reports are accurate then we call for the removal of such a bigoted individual who is unfit to be a priest and a complete restructuring of the temple administration which has so far shown no understanding or concern for the true message of Hindu dharma and its vision of society committed to equality and dignity of all beings. We further appeal to the authorities to take action against those who assaulted the women and to protect Dalits from further discrimination by narrow minded and prejudiced individuals.
The Dalits plan to storm the temple on Sunday 26 November and reclaim their right as Hindus to perform their spiritual practices within the temple. As per the plan, young girls, followed by married women, will first step into the temple premises. Others will then follow them, singing devotional songs and playing musical instruments in honour of the Gods. Hindu Human Rights fully supports this action as long as it's done non-violently and urges all Hindu organisations and individuals to show solidarity with their Hindu sister and brothers.
Thank you
