The Trincomalee District Young Men Hindu Association (TDYMHA) Tuesday brought
to the notice of the Hindu Religious Affairs Minister of Sri Lanka that
lands belonging to several Hindu temples in the Trincomalee district are
being unlawfully occupied by members of the majority community of the country,
thus depriving the income from the lands to these temples, sources said
Lands belonging thousands of civilians in the northern part of the Valikamam division of Jaffna along with the two temples and numerous Hindu shrines are to be acquired under Gazette Extraordinary No.1083/9 of June 8, 1999. The Hindu Congress sought an urgent appointment with the President to discuss the matter in another letter faxed to her today. The Hindu Congress says in its letter:

Armed Forces Bomb Hindu Temple At Suthanthirapuram (Vanni)
The Sri Sithivinayakar Hindu temple for lord Ganesha situated at Suthanthirapuram
junction has been damaged by the Sinhala armed forces during their June
10 bombing and shelling of the Suthanthirapuram Tamil refugee settlement.
26 Tamil civilians including women and children lost their lives. More than
50 civilians were injured. The damages to the temple are assessed at Rs.
50,000. The house of the head priest was also hit. The priest, Ramachandra
Iyer Ramalinga Sarma, and his wife were injured in the attack. The damages
to his house is estimated at Rs. 30,000. The Sinhalese armed forces have
destroyed or severely damaged more than 1800 Hindu temples in Tamil Eelam
over the past few years.
Some
1560 Hindu temples destroyed
About 1560 Hindu temples have been damaged and rendered useless while 240
Hindu temples have been totally destroyed due to ongoing war in the North
and east. According to the memorandum forwarded to the director general
of the UNESCO by the Hindu Religious Priest Organisation of the North East
Province.
The All Ceylon Hindu Congress in a statement issued in Colombo on 27 January 1998 said "It is with immense pain of mind that we have come to know that 24 divine statues if Kandy Sri Selva Vinayagar Kovil have been damaged by hooligans on Sunday January 25, and the divine chariot of Kurunduvatte Sri Muthumariamman Kovil was also burnt on the same day".
